The first moving footage of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»that exists is a film reel from 1907.
Shot by William Harbeck, the reel actually features shots of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»and Victoria, the two major centres on Canada's Pacific coast at the time (Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»boomed right around that time and became B.C.'s biggest city between 1901 and 1911). There's even a documentary about the footage.
Now it's been remastered by a YouTuber who goes by Nass and specializes in restoring old footage.
They've added sound effects to match the setting (with horses neighing and bike bells), added colour to the footage (including a blue sky), and stabilized the footage, while retaining the film's clarity.
Essentially they've created a video that is more true to the time and place that it was shot in .
This isn't actually the first time it's been remastered; in early 2021 a YouTuber took a shot at it and released a similar video, stabilized, colourized, and with sound effects. While they're similar, the new version is sharper with a bit more colour. The new version is also two-and-a-half minutes longer as it includes a trip down west Robson Street.
Nass has also added descriptors of where each clip was shot. It starts off in Victoria before transitioning to Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»for the bulk of the video.
