MV Quillayute
Pioneer ferry. Chugging along the coast is the MV Quillayute. It was the first ferry to run between Gibsons and Horseshoe Bay and was part of Seattle-based Black Ball Ferries, which launched its Canadian service in 1951. Black Ball provided the first real competition to Union Steamships, which had been plying the coast since 1889, but it was taken over in 1961 by what would become BC Ferries after a labour dispute led the provincial government to desire more control.
