Gastown

鶹ýӳbegan with a saloon. It was near this tree at the corner of Carrall and Water Streets that the garrulous barkeep John “Gassy Jack” Deighton opened his first watering hole, servicing the workers from the nearby Hastings Mill. In 1870, the year this photograph of Water Street was taken, the informal little hamlet of Gastown was surveyed and officially anointed the Township of Granville.
