Gastown
In 1870, the year this photograph of Water Street was taken, the informal little hamlet of Gastown was surveyed and officially anointed the Township of Granville. It was also near this tree at the corner of Carrall and Water Street that the infamous barkeep John “Gassy Jack” Deighton (yes, that Gassy Jack) opened his first watering hole. The saloon serviced the workers from the nearby Hastings Mill.
