East Van Cross
Commissioned on a budget of just over $200,000 by the city as part of its Olympic and Paralympic Public Art Program in conjunction with the 2010 Winter Olympics, the illuminated neon cross is a clever visual and textual pun in which a crossword spells out East Van. It was part of an $800,000 section of the program named Mapping and Marking, which differed from other public art programs in that the ideas came from artists not bureaucrats. The cross was designed by one of Canada’s leading international artists, Ken Lum.
