Dupont Street
Until 1907 East Pender was known as Dupont Street and was home to the city’s red light district. By day it was a busy commercial thoroughfare at the entrance to Chinatown. At night the red lights winked on and mobs of men thronged the wooden sidewalks in search of female company in the brothels that occupied the two-storey clapboard buildings. In 1906 police closed the Dupont Street brothels, though they simply moved to adjacent neighbourhoods.
