Burrard Bridge Controversy
Opened in 1932, the Burrard Bridge still managed to create controversy in 1949 when A.F. Ames of the 鶹ýӳArt School called its pillars “ashcans with a gasoline station on top.” Bridge designer Major John R. Grant retorted, explaining the rationale behind the design, and saying that he’d rather trust the “esthetic ideas of the engineer.”
