BC Penitentiary Riot
Prisoners at the BC Penitentiary in New Westminster rioted in 1963 after three inmates were detected trying to escape. The three took a guard hostage, and insisted on negotiating with popular radio host Jack Webster. Among their grievances was a demand not to be placed in “the hole,” the solitary confinement space that terrorized the prison population for decades.
