No people or animals were injured after a large barn was razed in a fire at an Abbotsford Market on Monday.
Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service responded to a structure fire at 32200 King Rd. at about 7:30 a.m. on May 1.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered a barn at Neufeld Farms, a market and grocery store fully engulfed in flames.
“Thank you so much to the amazing Abbotsford Fire Department for tirelessly working at putting out the fire on one of our barns today,” says a staff member. “No humans or animals were hurt, which we are incredibly thankful for.”
The staff member says firefighters also saved the barn beside the burned-down one.
“They were extremely brave, and we cannot thank them enough,” says the staff member.
A City of Abbotsford spokesperson says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Lynn Kool was walking her dogs around 7:40 a.m. when she saw the smoke and said it spread quickly.
“On the way back, that front building, you can see, was fully contained at about 8:05, and the road was closed,” she says.
King Road had to be closed between Clearbrook Road and Columbia Street.
The Abbotsford Police Department says heavy smoke can be seen in the area. It does not appear any departing flights from Abbotsford Airport were impacted.
Crews remained at the scene throughout the afternoon.
Many people took to social media to let Neufeld Farms know they were saddened by the news and concerned about the business.
Neufeld posted on social media that it is back open on Tuesday.
“We are overwhelmed with the love and support we have received from such an incredible community,” says a staff member.
