'Fire code safety issues' close Marvel Avengers exhibit in Burnaby temporarily

The exhibition opened earlier this month, but the City of Burnaby said it was "occupied without first getting a building permit."

The is temporarily closed due to "several building and fire code safety issues," according to a tweet from the City of Burnaby's official Twitter page.

"This exhibit was occupied without first getting a building permit, and upon City inspection, several building and fire code safety issues were identified. Therefore, the fire department ordered them to cease operations," reads the city's tweet.

A public relations representative for the Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. exhibit said while there isn't a confirmation on the reopening date, they are "optimistic that it will be (open) within the next few days," according to Hailey Price. An official update is expected to come by tomorrow afternoon (March 23).

A legal notice from the City of Burnaby's building inspections department was posted on the door of the exhibit on March 17, stating, "Do Not Occupy."

Burnaby's public affairs officer Cole Wagner told the NOW in a statement the exhibit was issued a business license, which was conditional that they have a fire and building inspection.

"When Fire and Building did the inspection, they determined that there were several bylaw infractions which would prevent them from operating," Wagner said.

The exhibition is located at The Amazing Brentwood. The mall's  for the exhibit states, "Due to unforeseen circumstances, Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. will be temporarily closed."

The exhibition will contact ticket holders directly to reschedule; ticket holders can email [email protected] or call 1-800-441-0819 for more information.

The NOW has also reached out to the Burnaby Fire Department for more information.
