A man with a long record of Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»thefts stemming from an opioid addiction has been jailed for one day in addition to time served after pleading guilty to a string of robberies.
Miguel Alexandre Thibault pleaded guilty to three counts of theft under $5,000 as well as a breach of a court order when he appeared via video in Vancouver’s Downtown Community Court.
Judge James Bahen heard from Crown prosecutor Marcel Lehoulier that Thibault’s list of prior convictions is 14 pages long.
He told the judge Thibault has a “continuous spree of offences” starting in June. Court heard Thibault was in breach of court-ordered conditions when he went to a Surrey Winners store as well as a London Drugs.
The court heard Thibault was caught taking $140 worth of material from a London Drugs, caught with $440 in merchandise from the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Granville Street Winners outlet on Aug. 4 and, on Sept. 10, took $401 in goods from Mountain Equipment Co-op’s Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»store.
Bahen said with credit for time already served since his arrest, Thibault needed to serve one more day.
“He has since served that one-day sentenced by his appearance in court today so he will be released this afternoon,” Bahen said.
The judge noted Thibault is now on a methadone program to attempt to deal with his addiction. Defence lawyer Zack Myers said Thibault is going to be going into addiction treatment therapy at two Lower Mainland facilities.
