A driver whose only valid licence – a learner’s permit – expired a decade ago said goodbye to his Mercedes SUV after police caught him pulling an illegal U-turn on Burnaby Mountain.
Burnaby RCMP has teamed up with SFU’s traffic safety unit for an extended winter enforcement project, and officers were at Tower Road cracking down on illegal left turns Wednesday morning, according to Const. Kevin Connolly, a member of the detachment’s traffic unit.
One driver who made the illegal turn didn’t have any identification on him, Connolly said, and it was later determined his only licence, a learner’s permit, had expired in 2012.
Along with tickets for the illegal left turn and driving without a licence, the man was handed an indefinite driving prohibition.
His vehicle was towed and will be impounded for seven days.
Mounties will continue partnering with SFU on the enforcement project into January, according to Connolly, with the duration of the campaign depending on how drivers on the Mountain respond.
He said speeding enforcements on Gaglardi Way approaching the lower bus loop seem to have made a difference already, with fewer drivers speeding into the 30 km/h stretch.
