Richmond RCMP are looking for information about an alleged road rage incident in late December where a driver claims bear spray was used.
The driver of a grey four-door Tesla claimed he was followed closely by a South Asian man driving a black Hyundai sedan through the tunnel. Both cars exited Highway 99 on the Steveston Highway off-ramp and then proceeded westbound.
The Hyundai was allegedly swerving between lanes behind the Tesla right up to No. 4 Road at which point, the Hyundai driver pulled in front and cut the other driver off.
Both drivers got out of their cars and that’s when the Tesla driver alleges the Hyundai driver used bear spray.
The Tesla driver said the other driver then got back in his car and drove off westbound on Steveston Highway.
The incident took place around 7:06 p.m. on Dec. 27.
Richmond RCMP officers responded to the incident at the 6600 block of Steveston Highway, close to Gilbert Road.
Richmond RCMP are asking the public for dash cam footage from 6:40 p.m. through 7:15 p.m. in the following areas:
- Northbound Highway 99 from the Highway 17 on-ramp, along Highway 99 and on the Steveston Highway off-ramp from Highway 99
- Steveston Highway off-ramp from Highway 99 up to between No. 3 Road and Gilbert Road
“This is a typically a busy stretch of road around 7 p.m. on a weekday,” said Cpl. Adriana O’Malley, Richmond RCMP media relations officer. “We are asking anyone who was in that area around that time to review their dash cam footage or if you witnessed the incident to contact us.”
The driver of the Hyundai was described as South Asian wearing black or dark clothing.
