is a new contemporary Korean restaurant that opened in early March in Vancouver's Riley Park neighbourhood.
The restaurant reflects a "Korean-inspired concept with a modern and refined approach, balancing traditional flavours with contemporary techniques," according to a rep for Nui, who a few weeks ago shared details about the venture with V.I.A.
Ultimately, the goal is to appeal to both those who are familiar with Korean cuisine and wish to try something new and anyone new to Korean food altogether.
Behind Nui's menu of refined but approachable fare is chef-owner JJ Hwang.
Hwang has developed a small menu for Nui, including a longtime family favourite soup called gomtang (also known as gomguk or gukbap). Hwang's version at Nui features a clear broth with a hint of herbaceous green, thinly sliced pork, and rice and barley. The soup is also available with noodles instead.
The dish, like others at Nui, is humble and comforting; though it may seem simple, its simplicity belies the inherent complexity of crafting its clean, fresh, and satisfying flavours. Guests are served tangy kimchi and chili paste on the side to add an optional splash of heat to the broth or individual bites.
Other signature dishes include rice bowls, including one with tender slices of grilled fatty pork atop rice with creamy, silky egg yolk. For dessert, a scoop of French Vanilla ice cream is drizzled in honey and has a thin, crunchy sweet potato crisp on top with flecks of sesame and a bit of salt.
The lunch menu is an abbreviated version of what is available at dinner, particularly in that in the evenings, there are more starters on offer.
Like the menu, the interior of Nui is simple, modern, and light. There is a kitchen workstation and bar with seating along one wall and then square tables with matching stools in the small dining room with a wood-panelled wall, high ceilings, and contemporary fixtures.
Nui is located at 4811 Main St, which was previously home to the first location of Autostrada. The local Italian osteria closed its doors there on Dec. 14, 2024.
The restaurant is open Tue day to Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Tuesday to Thursday and Sundays from 5 to 9 p.m.; and Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 10 p.m. Reservations are available via .
Video: What's on the menu at Nui, a new Korean restaurant in Vancouver
Here’s a look at a new modern Korean restaurant in Vancouver. The aesthetics and the menu are about simplicity - it’s clean, bright, easygoing. I went at lunch, so a smaller menu than at dinner but I did have some signature dishes like Nui’s take on gomtang, a pork soup with rice and barley (also available with noodles). The chef/owner shared with me in an earlier interview that the idea is for Nui to represent a fresh option for Korean food in 鶹ýӳand represents a great entry into Korean cuisine for the unfamiliar or a new take for those who know it well. They are in the old Autostrada space on Main but the room looks and feels very different!
