Tamales, the dish made from a special corn dough that's filled and steamed, are a beloved item in Mexico and other Mesoamerican countries.
Prepared using nixtamalized masa (a process by which corn kernels are soaked and cooked in an alkaline solution) and formed by hand, before being wrapped and set to steam, tamales are considered by many a special occasion food, rooted in family and community tradition.
Now Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»is home to a just-opened shop that sells its wide-ranging line of tamales to enjoy on the spot or to take home to enjoy later.
The company, called , has an established online presence and has been selling locally since 2020, but has now launched a storefront in Mount Pleasant, at 2525 Main St (in the former Kafka's Coffee location).
"Blending ancient flavours with local ingredients, Tamaly Shop invites you to experience Mesoamerican culture through the rich and balanced flavours of maize, vegetables, fruits, and spices," beckons the business on its website.
To that end, Tamaly Shop's menu of tamales includes both savoury and sweet filling options, as well as several that are entirely plant-based. Options include pork with salsa verde, vegan mashed potato with jalapeño, or even pineapple (for dessert). Tamales can be paired with "dips," like guacamole, mole,
Order tamales individually, in combos with a drink, or in dozen, half-dozen, or party packs to take home.
Beverages offered at Tamaly Shop include agua fresca (fruit water) and horchata (a sweetened rice drink). They'll also be serving hot chocolate.
Tamale fans may be familiar with the brand, as its packaged offerings are sold at various markets across Metro Vancouver, including Vegan Supply, Parthenon, Juice Truck, and Mi Tierra Latina, among others.
