Last summer, local foodies and Instagrammers went nuts for the delicious eye candy from the Sushi Donuts vendor who was set up at the Chinatown Night Market.
Well, not too long after the vendors packed it in for the season, Sushi Donuts morphed into a full sushi bar restaurant called . Located on 8th near Cambie, Uma Sushi has a full menu of sushi, sashimi, don (rice bowls), hot and cold dishes, and an assortment of their famed sushi donuts.
Sushi Donuts are more than just a ring of rice with fish dropped on top. The inside of the rice is filled with a ribbon of thin pieces of fish, and there's a generous portion of the fish on top, too, along with other ingredients. They are pretty to look at, and also quite tasty; the fish is fresh and the rice nicely seasoned and textured, and the flavours all work together nicely.
The Tuna Lover has chopped tuna with shiso and green onion inside, and has a piece of negitoro torched, aburi-style, along with avocado and tobiko. One of their other signature Sushi Donuts, which they also had at the now-defunct Chinatown Night Market, is the Salmon on Fire, which features crab meat, aburi salmon, avocado and tobiko.
Uma has four kinds of sushi donuts altogether--right now there's a scallop and crab meat one and a fish-free one with mango, avocado, cucumber, and kiwi--but they explained that sometimes they rotate flavours in and out. Each Sushi Donut is $7, but they offer deals like three for $18 and six for $33, and the donuts come with certain combos, like their Sashimi Don combo.
The days are over (the event has been cancelled by organizers the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Chinatown Business Improvement Association Society), but if you want to see what the heck a Sushi Donut is--and taste it, too--you can definitely still find them at Uma Sushi in Vancouver.
Uma Sushi is located at 450 West 8th Avenue in Vancouver.
