With a Grand Opening on Dec. 1, brings the Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»city back up to three, and it brings a new taproom to the area.
It's been just over a year since longtime Surrey brewery Big Ridge shut down; it was located fairly nearby in South Newton.
Wayback is going for a retro look with its 70s style, roller skates, and icons from 50 years ago. Nostalgia is one of its "four key words " (as are California, fresh, and unexpected).
"Think rustic coastal, muted, airy, and laid back Bohemian feel. We want to create that sense of escapism, where you can enjoy the bright and airy feel of the space," Wayback says on its social media.
Head brewer Kevin Emms has plenty of local experience, with recent stints as the brewmaster at Granville Island Brewing and Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers. Most recently he was with the now defunct MOD Beverages.
They have a line-up of five beers already on their site (all appear to be in 355 mL cans): a classic lager, a west coast IPA, and a citrus wheat (based on a Belgian wit) are all fairly usual options. They also have a Mexican-style take on a Bavarian dark lager called Baja Dark and a light lager called Lite described as having herbal and stone fruit flavours.
The new brewery is tucked away at 15063 54a Ave. in the Panorama Ridge neighbourhood on the southern edge of Newton in Surrey; the brewery is taking over a section of a light industrial/office park.
It's actually related to a Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»business, Resurrection Spirits in East Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»at 1672 Franklin St.
