There's a new restaurant for fans of Japanese set-menu dining that has recently opened up in Gastown.
, located at 68 E Cordova St in the old La Mezcaleria space, offers "Kaiseki style omakase and traditional izakaya style," menus, according to its website.
The restaurant debuted earlier this month, though owners have just declared the restaurant officially open as of Sunday (Aug. 13).
With tiered pricing and seatings, Tekkaba shifts its offerings day to night and depending on what kind of dining experience you are looking for, specializing in omakase (chef's choice) and izakaya (share plates). Additionally, Tekkaba also has an a la carte menu, featuring dishes such as Caviar Truffle Uni Pasta, sashimi and nigiri, or Kimchi Fried Rice.
At lunchtime, Tekkaba has a $42 omakase meal option, available from noon to 1:30 p.m., as well as a $23 lunch shokado set with a main and three sides.
In the evenings, the new restaurant serves a dinner omakase ($78 per person) and a premium omakase ($118 per person), with two seatings per night. They also do an izakaya dinner for $50 per person with two seatings and a late night discounted $30 per person izakaya option. In those cases, the amounts are taken as deposit and applied towards your final bill.
"After the second dinner seating, the restaurant turns into an izakaya/pub with DJ’s and strobe lights," describes Tekkaba on its Instagram account.
Tekkaba also offers a musical experience thanks to live performances by composer and pianist Jiyun Kim.
The restaurant is a venture by a business called Pacific Dream Group. Its charitable branch, Hope for the People, benefits from called "One bowl of rice," during which proceeds are donated to the organization, which helps locals in need. The event is offered during lunch and dinner on Mondays.
