A new Moroccan restaurant called Mogador has opened where Moltaqa, a different Moroccan place, was located in Vancouver's Gastown neighbourhood.

A new restaurant is coming to Gastown, and it happens to be replacing another restaurant that offered the same cuisine.

Mogador is an located at 51 W Hastings St. in Gastown. The new restaurant's grand opening runs from Dec. 15 to 17, with dinner service each night starting at 5 p.m.

While a menu hasn't been shared online, the restaurant advertises "the flavours of Moroccan and Mediterranean gastronomy."

Dishes shown on social media include tagine, couscous, and tabbouleh.

Mogador is a former name (originally from Portuguese) of the historic town of Essaouira in the North African nation. Mogador Island is a small island off the coast of the city, as well.

Michelin recommended Moltaqa moves on

The address was formerly home to the original Moltaqa. The restaurant also serves high-end Moroccan foods and was recently added to the Michelin Guide's list of recommended spots in Vancouver.

They opened a second - now only - location at 1002 Mainland St in Yaletown.

Restaurants on and around the same block of West Hastings have sometimes struggled due to its proximity to the Downtown Eastside.
