Long-time Port Coquitlam pizza shop owners close up to start new bakery

Talk about a life transition — this couple is saying good bye to 123 Pizza on Coast Merdian they’ve owned for years and opening up a new business in Port Coquitlam, selling Persian-style bread, crackers and pastries.

The longtime owners of a popular pizza joint in Port Coquitlam are moving on — but they won’t be going too far.

Instead of running at ., Saeid Sayyadi, and his wife, Maryam Fathi, will be devoting their strong work ethic toward a new bakery that recently opened up.

Many will appreciate 123 Pizza for its Persian meat, veggie and chicken pizzas as well as traditional Italian pepperoni and deluxe pizzas with lots of flavourful meat and cheese.

But in the coming days Sayyadi will be handing over the business to a new owner, who purchased the business in May.

Sayyadi told the Tri-City News he’s looking forward to be working alongside his wife, a pastry chef, to oversee in its new location at , in the Dominion Triangle area of Port Coquitlam.

“This is a business we have been working on for a long time,” Sayyadi said.

In fact, Sahar Bakery was established in 2012, and the couple has been running the business at the same time as 123 Pizza, filling bakery orders out of commissary kitchens.

However, due to demand — and orders from Persian supermarkets — they got to the point where they needed a site where they could bake the crackers, breads and pastries for which they have become known.

For those who have moved from Iran, Sahar Bakery provides the nostalgic flavour of home, said Sayyadi, whose bakery offers 60 products, including multigrain flatbread, cumin oat and honey sweet crackers, date and nut cake, honey cake and breadsticks.

Customers can purchase online via the website or in person from the flagship location at 1150-577 Nicola Ave. as well as in major Persian supermarkets across the Lower Mainland.

And, for those who love pizza, Sahar bread is excellent as a pizza base, according to Sayyadi.
