When The Pear Tree in Burnaby closed down this summer after a treasured two-decade span, many tears were shed. However, the end of one chapter at 4120 Hastings Street means a fresh opportunity for a new start, and, in this case, it's a Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Italian restaurant that is getting its new beginnings.

Portobello Ristorante is moving from 1429 West Broadway in Fairview to the former Pear Tree location, and is gearing up to be open "real soon," according to its website.

The restaurant is among the many businesses that have left their spaces in the West Broadway and Granville area due to redevelopment and the forthcoming construction of the .

Southern Italian fare is at the heart of the menu at Portobello, as executed by chef/owner 'Pino' Milano, though you will see some influence from the north. Portobello has house-made gnocchi, an array of pasta dishes, starters like fresh burrata and soups and salads, and signature mains like a classic ossobuco.

Naturally, the restaurant's namesake is on the menu, in the form of its Fungo Portobello Gratinato starter - a "portobello mushroom topped with garlic croutons, Parmigiano, fresh herbs and baked. served with a drizzle of roasted red pepper sauce, balsamic vinegar."

At its old address, Portobello was also known for its intimate dining room, and program of featuring the work of local artists in rotation on its walls, both of which are expected to be revived in their new digs.

The Heights is no stranger to Italian food with its long history of residents from the "old country." Between Anton’s, Sopra Sotto, Cioffi’s and more, the area is well-stocked with Italian food.

Keep an eye on Portobello's website and for updates regarding its opening date.
