The Gelato Shop is owned by Domenico and Araceli Carnovale, a charming couple who live just two blocks from their business.

Domenico, who was born and raised in Italy, moved to Canada and has raised a family, but went back to Italy to train and complete his certification as a master in making gelato through La Federazione Italiana Gelatieri.

It was all part of a 20-year dream of the couple to open their own place, Araceli said. The couple married in Italy and she remembers them looking at all of the street-side cafes.

“My husband said, ‘Imagine having that in Canada’,” she said.

From that moment, the dream was started, but they postponed it for a while as they raised their two sons (they are now teenagers who help out in the shop after school).

But now the dream has arrived and the couple got a big boost on Hats Off Day with hundreds of people coming through their doors.

“It was so busy I don’t even remember what happened,” Araceli joked.

The gelato is all made in-house. Fiordilatte also features fresh-made coffees and lunch food items.

The Heights business district in Burnaby has developed a reputation as “dessert row” because of all of the sweet choices available across a diverse cultural spectrum.

When it comes to baked goodness, the Heights is equally loaded with such choices as Fortuna Bakery, Valley Bakery, Bon Bon Bakery and Chez Christophe.

If you like your dessert cold as ice, the Heights offers Glenburn Soda Fountain’s creamy goodness, the in-house-made dreamy treats of Nuvola Gelato and Zen Q’s bubble tea. Now you can add Fiordilatte and their gelato to the list.
