Photos: Behind the scenes at Canada's first Din Tai Fung under construction in Vancouver

Checking in on the progress of this hotly-anticipated restaurant opening.

First announced in 2023, is finally nearing completion on its in downtown Vancouver.

The new, massive restaurant fills more than 16,400 square feet on the second floor of 1132 Alberni St.

Known for its  (soup dumplings), Din Tai Fung first opened in 1958 as a in Taiwan.

In 1972 it pivoted to a "humble dumpling and noodle shop," according to a press release. More than 50 years later, it now has around 170 locations in 13 countries (Canada will be the 14th). Four of its locations have received the from the Michelin Guide.

The 鶹ýӳlocation is still under construction, with a plan to open this spring. An exact opening date has not yet been determined.

The huge space will seat more than 300 people (including an 88-person patio); expectations are for Din Tai Fung Vancouver to employ about 300 people as well.

The new restaurant's interior is inspired by Chinese Zen gardens.

The entrance will feature a rock garden and have large floor lanterns. In the dining room, a large faux bonsai tree is currently under wraps. Tiles meant to emulate a garden path will wind through the restaurant.

The xiao long bao that Din Tai Fung is known for will be made in full view of customers; a dumpling-making station is being built near the bar.

"Our goal is to be the leader in authentic Chinese, upscale casual dining through consistency and excellence of food, service, and ambiance," reads a development application submitted by Din Tai Fung to the City of 鶹ýӳin 2023.
