Chicka chicka yeah! McLovin of Superbad fame (not to mention Honolulu resident and organ donor) turns 41 today, June 3, according to his famous fake I.D.
Vancouver’s favourite funny guy and Superbad writer Seth Rogen marked this , inspiring us to gather a few fun facts about Rogen’s hometown-inspired flick.
Sam Fogell AKA McLovin is a real guy
In the movie, he’s portrayed by Christopher Mintz-Plasse but IRL he attended Point Grey Secondary School and was best friends with Rogen and fellow Superbad writer Evan Goldberg. Supposedly he even had a fake ID but no word on if it read "McLovin" or not.
More than just McLovin!
According to a 2017 tweet from Rogen, most of the characters' names are real from his adolescence. Even a throwaway one-liner about a kid who eats lunch alone resonates with fans today. The punchline of the joke, Steven Glanzberg, still has people but apparently, he doesn't .
It’s all in the family
Rogen’s dad Mark appears in the film as “Father with Bat,” an underwear-clad character who chases the main trio while wielding a baseball bat. And Goldberg’s brother Dave drew the many phallic cartoons seen in Superbad.
Superbad was long in the making
Rogen and Goldberg started their first draft of the screenplay as teenagers. The pair originally met as 12-year-olds in a bar mitzvah class. They wrote the Superbad script based on their experiences as Point Grey Secondary students— nearly 10 years after putting pen to paper, the movie made it to the silver screen.
