The will be returning to St. Paul's Hospital this year with a bang.
Vancouver's annual Christmas display is famous for its thousands upon thousands upon thousands of lights, but this year, when the lights go on for the first time, the skies will be a little brighter for a moment.
That's because fireworks will be marking the occasion.
It's been a few years since fireworks were part of the Lights of Hope illumination event; they were last set off for the festive gathering in 2019.
Lights of Hope isn't just about wowing crowds and passersby; each year it raises money for the St. Paul's Foundation, which supports patients, residents, caregivers and others working with or being cared for by Providence Health Care, which operates St. Paul's and other medical facilities.
"Funds raised support innovative research, compassionate care for patients, and life-enriching activities for residents in long-term care. Donations to Lights of Hope save and change lives," indicate organizers in a media release.
The fundraising works through stars, which can be sponsored, or a big 50/50 raffle.
This year's goal is $3.6 million; over the past 25 years, Lights of Hope has raised more than $50 million.
The fireworks, and lighting of the display will take place on Thursday, Nov. 23 at the hospital on 1081 Burrard St; the event goes from 6 to 8 p.m. with the illumination taking place around 6:50 p.m. Hundreds of people are expected for the event.
The display will be lit up until Jan. 5, 2024.
