The annual Dragon Boat Festival takes place in Steveston on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

The annual Dragon Boat Festival is back this Saturday (Aug. 24) at Imperial Landing in Steveston.

Sixty-nine teams are expected to compete in the annual event, starting at 8:30 a.m. and lasting the entire day until 6 p.m.

In addition to watching the dragon boat races, attendees can listen to live music and watch cultural demonstrations.

Some of the cultural performances include the Traditional Sichuan Face Changer, Coastal Wolf Pack at 1 p.m., the Hon Hsing Athletic Club and Luc LeMans.

Renowned Musqueam artist and elder Debra Sparrow’s boat, called One Hundred Years of Wisdom, will be on display for the first time in Richmond at this year’s dragon boat festival.

Sparrow created artwork for a boat reflecting “shared links between different communities,” states the festival’s website.

Festival parking is available at the Fentiman Place parkade at Garry Street and Fentiman Place. A minimum $10 donation is required for parking – proceeds go to the Richmond Food Bank and Learning Buddies Network. The lot will open at 7 a.m., but organizers caution that parking is limited.
