There are a bunch of different types of nerds we've been shouting out on the site lately. There are the sneaker nerds that line up outside of Livestock for days to get the coolest new kicks, there are the Star Trek nerds that line up outside of the Rio to make sure they don't miss the convention, and now there are the literary nerds like myself who are crapping in their pants at the prospect of lining up not once but twice to first meet David Sedaris at Chapters then to listen to him talk about his latest book at the CBC Studios.
David is my favourite living author and, as a photographer/journalist, over the past few years I've attempted hitting his PR people from multiple angles to try to shoot photos of him and/or interview him... to no avail. At this point I'll gladly accept shaking his hand briefly at a book store as a fan and snapping a cell phone photo, but the trouble lies in trying to decide if I should skip the signing at the book store altogether in order to post up early in the morning outside of CBC to make sure that I'm one of the first 120 people in line or if I should try to hit both so that I'm sure to walk away with a signed copy of... of... Jesus, how do I even decide which book I bring for him to sign? Oh, man.
And are there 119 other nerds like me in the city who are able to take the afternoon off of work? Will the CBC grant my request for some sort of media pass to the taping so that I can hit both? The woes of a book nerd!
Here's the info about the off the CBC site:
Welcome to the CBC Radio Studio One Book Club! This program was created to give book lovers the chance to meet their literary heroes in the warm and intimate setting of CBC Radio's Studio One. It's a free event for 120 very lucky audience members. The audience also has the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the author's background, inspiration, and experiences. Our first author was Salman Rushdie and he has since been joined by Margaret Atwood, Douglas Coupland, Anne Marie MacDonald, Ian Rankin, Margaret Cho, Roddy Doyle, William Gibson, Anthony Bourdain, Vikram Seth, David Suzuki, Alexander McCall Smith, Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket), George R.R. Martin, Marian Keyes and more. We present authors from all genres, who are the best at their craft. The CBC Radio Studio One Book Club is hosted by Sheryl MacKay and broadcast on her CBC Radio weekend morning show, North by Northwest, with an appropriate co-host depending on the guest's literary genre.
For my sake, please don't show up to either of these events.
