Most of us are likely not heading to Jamaica this spring, but a little bit of the country’s popular music, reggae, is coming to us in Squamish.
The One Love Reggae Beats Party returns to the Mamquam River Campground on April 19, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
The adult (19-plus) event features Tugstar & Mr. Paris, and DJ Kemo, of the Rascalz, on the stage at the campground that was built especially for the event.
This is the fourth annual One Love festival at the site, located at 2023 Centennial Way.
John Harvey, founder of the rustic Mamquam River Campground, told The Squamish Chief the festival is borne out of his own love of reggae.
"I'm a reggae fanatic," he said, after having spent a year in Africa as a young man teaching carpentry in a little village."
Harvey saw Bob Marley play live twice in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»in the 1970s.
"I would have seen him the third time in Vancouver, but then he got cancer."
(Marley died from skin cancer in 1981.)
The upcoming Squamish event, which is all music, dancing and vibes, Harvey said, usually draws from 100 to 300 like-minded attendees.
Camping is free with a ticket, and cheap firewood will be available.
Tickets are $20 in advance until April 18 or $25 on the day of the event and at the door.
