CHERRY BLOSSOMS... 2 MONTHS LATER

This spring we had a bunch of posts about how amazing the cherry blossoms look when they take over the city ( 1 , 2 , 3 posts).

This spring we had a bunch of posts about how amazing the cherry blossoms look when they take over the city (, , posts). What's almost as awesome is that inside each one of those little pink flowers is a seed (I'm no horticulturist so the reality is that there could be like ten seeds in each for all I know), and what I learned in the last month is that when they fall from the tree there's a pretty good chance that some of them are gonna germinate... and they grow faster than weeds.

Look at this one above, it's on the nastiest part of my lawn, all brown with not much soil, mostly sand, ant tunnels fully inhabited by ants... and it's only taken two weeks to get this size! My first attempt at getting rid of them was straight mowing over them. After they grew back in a couple days I tried pulling them out by the root, and they still grew back.

I had one on the top part of my lawn that I was hoping would last a couple of years, like I wanted to see if I could grow it into my very own cherry blossom tree... but my neighbour mowed over it. Oh well, a new one'll pop up in it's place in the next couple of weeks, I'm sure of it.
