2012 was a difficult year for the Hamber Griffins. The varsity team struggled to win a game in the program鈥檚 third year, but 2013 brings with it a different attitude, one that isn鈥檛 satisfied with just showing up.
On Friday for the Griffins (0-2) 3:30 p.m. meeting against the Moscrop Panthers (1-0), the Eric Hamber secondary student council hosts Hamber Pride, a homecoming party for the entire student body and football supporters.
Notre Dame vs Hugh Boyd
7:30 p.m. at Burnaby Lakes
The Notre Dame Jugglers host Hugh Boyd at Burnaby Lakes 7:30 p.m. Friday. The AAA Jugglers (0-2) have lost two-straight in exhibition and meet the AA Trojans with the same pre-season record.
Head coach Richard Scott said the Trojans may be an AA-sized team, but they are not a team to take lightly, especially running back Kory Nagata, who Scott called 鈥渁 very good athlete,鈥� and said, 鈥淲e will have to shut him down in order to get a W.鈥�
The Jugglers dropped their two first pre-season games to St. Thomas More and Mt. Boucherie scoring 15 and allowing 52. Scott said the offensive line has been stalled by injuries but this week鈥檚 clash could mark a turn-around. 鈥淥ur offence is taking longer to gel.鈥� He said, 鈥淲e hope that Friday night is the beginning of more points per game.鈥�
The Jugglers are led by returning seniors Blake Pickard, Aldrich Berrios, Anthony Toscano and Joe Algas. 鈥淭hese key players have shown some great leadership, despite our 0-2 start,鈥� said the coach. 鈥淥ur game against STM showed that we have greatly improved on the defensive side of the ball.鈥�
Against St. Thomas More Sept. 6 at Burnaby Lakes, the Jugglers held the Knights to 28 but only put up seven of their own.
鈥淭his year we are younger and smaller than last year, but seem to have more of a fighting spirit,鈥� said Scott.
Theo Landers was slotted in as quarterback in both games and the Grade 11 student has thrown for 80 yards, connecting on seven of 18 attempts. He 鈥渉as his feet wet now鈥� said the coach, 鈥渁nd must continue to improve.鈥�
