Three years younger at 15, von Dadelszen scored one more hit to defeat 18-year-old Cao 15-14 at the Cegep de Sherbrooke. Both athletes, who train with Dynamo Fencing Club in Richmond, also won gold in the girls team epee.

Cao reached the final by a slim one-point margin over a Quebec fencer while von Dadelszen defeated her Saskatchewan competitor 15-10.

After winning the semi-final that put her head to head against a familiar face, Cao said, “This is the same as when we’re at the club together. We compete but we’re still teammates.â€

Von Dadelszen said, “I’m not really thinking about it yet […] we’re still teammates right up to the moment that we step up on the strip against each other.

The national junior champion in 2012, von Dadelszen, a Magee student, was third best in Canada this spring and finished 29th in the U17 division at the world junior championships this April in Croatia.

Cao studies pharmacy at the University of B.C. and is a graduate of Churchill secondary.
