Supporters must choose between girls and boys finals, which are played across town at the same time

The city’s top senior girls and senior boys volleyball teams compete tonight to crown their champions. Want to watch both finals? Good luck with that.Ìý

Making it a more difficult decision, Van Tech competes for the senior girls and senior boys championship title.Ìý

The public school (VSSAA) girls play at Van Tech secondary while the senior boys compete across town at Magee. Both championship finals are at 6 p.m.Ìý

For the fifth year in a row, the girls and boys have competed for their respective city championship title at different gymnasiums but at the same time on the same day. Last year it was 6 p.m. on a Friday. The year before that, 5 p.m. on a Thursday. This year the finals are both at 6 p.m. Nov. 5.

The distance between Van Tech and Magee is 11 kilometres. Driving time is about 25 minutes as long as the roads are clear. Bussing takes about 50 minutes, optimistically, from stop to stop.

It’s not unlikely people would want to attend both games and watch both complete games though to the end. And given the senior boys and girls Talismen are taking centre court, many people in the school community will have to decide which team they watch or at what time they leave one game to see some of the other.Ìý

The amazing growth of club volleyball also means friendship and allegiances exist outside of school catchment. If there are players from Apex Volleyball Club competing in the girls final and the boys final, their coaches and supporters have to make a choice. Or at best, a compromise.

Thursday night schedule

  • In the senior girls championship, the Van Tech Talisman host the Churchill Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
  • In the senior boys championship, Van Tech plays David Thompson at Magee secondary at 6 p.m.
