If watching men and women throw axes, climb poles and saw through logs single-handedly is your thing, UBC Farm is the place to be on Sat., Jan. 27.
Part of the farm is being transformed into Timberdome as the UBC Thunderjacks host the loggersport championship.
The team will saw off against university teams from Montana, Idaho and Vancouver.
The 1970s were the heyday of logging sports for UBC’s forestry students. In 2014, the games were revived and the Thunderjacks now practise three times a week at their dedicated field. (It's important to have no passersby when you’re throwing an axe towards a bull’s eye.)
UBC now competes regularly in the U.S. college circuit and has been hosting the Classic since 2016.
The competition runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Events include single- and double-buck sawing, axe-throwing, speed chainsaw, pole-climing and a Canada vs U.S. relay race.
Admission is free.
If the farm parking lot is full, spectators are asked to park in the gravel lot across the street from the farm or on the street outside.
