Manitoba 36 – 32 UBC

Fog enveloped the University of B.C. campus on the weekend, but the weather didn’t stop 3,614 football fans from swarming Thunderbird Stadium for the Tbirds homecoming game against the Manitoba Bisons.

The No. 8 ranked Bison (2-1) spoiled the home crowd party, however, when they surged ahead in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter to win by four points. UBC (1-2) led by 17 points when Manitoba cut that lead to 32-22 with 5:46 on the clock. The Tbirds couldn’t hang on to the ball and the Bisons scored two more unanswered touchdowns.

QB Greg Bowcott completed 11 of 17 for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»College graduate and Tbird rookie Liam Mahara debuted for UBC on special teams and returned five kickoffs for 128 yards. His average 25.6 yards per carry elevates him to second best in the CIS behind teammate Alex Morrison who averages 28.8 yards for 346 total in gains.

UBC travels to Regina to meet the Rams (1-2) on Taylor Field at Mosaic Stadium.

Victoria 0 – 1 UBC

Women’s soccer coach Andrea Neil, a Prince of Wales grad and Tbirds alumna herself, notched her first win of the regular season since she was hired to lead the team last winter.

The No. 7 Thunderbirds move to 1-0-2 after they handed the No. 4 UVic Vikes their first loss of the season, winning by a single goal Saturday. The visitors put the ball in their own net in the 64th minute following a miscommunication in the dense fog. On Friday, UBC came from behind to tie the Fraser Valley Cascades 1-1.

UBC heads to the Prairies next weekend to meet the Regina Cougars (2-1) Sept. 21 and the undefeated Saskatchewan Huskies (3-0) Sept. 22.

UBC 6 – 1 Trinity Western

Vancouver’s Niall Cousens netted one goal and assisted on another in Friday’s homecoming men’s soccer game to defeat their Trinity Western rivals 5-1. The next day, the Tbirds travelled to Langley and defeated the Spartans 5-1.

UBC hosts the Fraser Valley Cascades (2-2) Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.

Calgary 0 – 7 UBC

The Tbirds women’s field hockey team sits 2-0 to start the season in defence of its two consecutive national championships. They swept the Calgary Dinos (0-2) at Wright Field, winning 7-1 Saturday and then besting that by blanking the visitors 7-0 Sunday.

Third year Tbird and West Point Grey Academy alumna Cassandra Tayler added a goal in Sunday’s win.Ìý
