More than 200 professional cyclists from all over North America and around the globe will converge on Delta this weekend to kick off Canada鈥檚 biggest professional road cycling series.

The Tour de Delta begins BC Superweek, a nine-race series that takes riders to six different communities throughout the Lower Mainland over a 10-day period.

The Tour de Delta is made up of three races: evening criteriums on Friday, July 5 in North Delta and Saturday, July 6 in Ladner as well as the UCI-sanctioned White Spot | Delta Road Race on Sunday, July 7 in Tsawwassen.

鈥淥ver the years, the communities of North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen have been incredibly welcoming to all the teams and cyclists to open BC Superweek,鈥 says BC Superweek series director Mark Ernsting. 鈥淚t鈥檚 excellent to see the cooperation and collaboration between the City of Delta, local businesses and community members. As such, the Tour de Delta continues to grow year after year.鈥

Now in its 19th year, the Tour de Delta is more than just professional cyclists going wheel-to-wheel as there are races for the kids and community festivals being held throughout the weekend.

鈥淭he Tour de Delta has become a major signifier that summer has arrived in Delta. The atmosphere across our communities is festive as cyclists and spectators from around the world take part in this truly thrilling cycling spectacle,鈥 says Mayor George Harvie.

鈥淥n behalf of Delta council, we are grateful to the outstanding athletes and fans, as well as our tremendous City of Delta staff and volunteers, that help realize this fantastic annual event.鈥

The UCI-sanctioned White Spot | Delta Road Races offers fans and aspiring cyclists an opportunity to see elite professional athletes representing their countries. The men and women wearing Team Canada jersey will look to accumulate points with an eye on international competitions like the World Championships and Olympic Games.

鈥淭he White Spot | Delta Road Race is a unique chance to see teams and cyclists who have traveled from across Canada and the United States, and around the world, to compete here in the Lower Mainland,鈥 says Ernsting. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the only UCI-certified road race in British Columbia and we are honoured to have it as part of the Tour de Delta and BC Superweek.鈥
