Canadian Olympic long jumper Christabel Nettey hopes to use the 麻豆传媒映画Sun Harry Jerome International Track Classic at Swangard Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday as a launching pad into a successful series of meets that will carry her through to September.
Another repeat of 2015 would suit her just fine, too, thank you.
For Nettey that was a wonderful year as she established the Jerome long jump meet record of 6.86 metres and both the national indoor and outdoor records of 6.99m.
At the age of 27, the Surrey native would also like to return to the performance she had this past March in Queensland at the International Classic. Her 6.92m jump is still tied for number two on this year鈥檚 IAAF world rankings, a spot she shares with Serbia鈥檚 Ivaba Spanovic. The current leader is Malaika Mihambo of Germany at 6.99m, ironically Nettey鈥檚 two national records.
Since her Queensland showing, Nettey鈥檚 performances have been mixed, ranking from 6.60 to 6.84m, but that latter mark gained her the gold medal at the Australian Commonwealth Games to go in her trophy case along with the gold medal from the Toronto Pan American Games a year earlier, and the bronze from the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She just missed the podium at the 2015 IAAF world championships, her 6.95m jump earning her fourth place.
A five-time Canadian champion, Nettey said: 鈥淎fter Australia I was pretty exhausted but knowing that this season would be taking me well into September I continued to train just not as intensely, but I鈥檓 back on track and in sync and ready for what hopefully will be another breakthrough.鈥�
Nettey鈥檚 main competition at the Jerome meet would appear to be American Kylie Price ( PB 6.77m) and newly-crowned NCAA heptathlon champion from Langley Georgia Ellenwood, who will contest both the long jump and 100m hurdles.
The meet within a meet聽 will feature the Canada-China聽 Team Sprint Challenge for the Pacific World Cup.
