Kiteboarders now welcome at Spanish Banks

The Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»park board opened the shorelines to kitesurfing for one year before they review the policy change.

A sign at Spanish Banks tells kitesurfers they can set sail.

For the next 12 months, kiteboarders can set sail at a designated launch near the western end of Spanish Banks.

Following the urging of the Squamish Windsport Society, the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»park board created a specific zone and signage to accommodate the recreational kiteboarders. The launch will remain in place for one year before it’s reviewed.

Kiteboarding, also known as kitesurfing, was previously prohibited on Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»shorelines by the park board bylaw that reads, in part, “No person shall use, carry or possess a surfboard, windsurfer, canoe or boat in a park or on a beach.â€

Kiteboarders who travelled to Howe Sound or Delta to get out on the water can now take flight at Spanish Banks on days when optimal winds are blowing.
