Gold for B.C. in baseball and soccer

By the end of the first week of the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., Team B.C. had amassed a haul of 61 medals, including 20 gold, 18 silver and 23 bronze.

By the end of the first week of the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., Team B.C. had amassed a haul of 61 medals, including 20 gold, 18 silver and 23 bronze. The provincial team counts 26 Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­athletes competing in individual and team events.

At the ballpark at Stade Amedee-Roy in Parc Victoria, two BC Premier Baseball League players, Brad Smith, a Point Grey student, and Britannia's Keenan Williams, helped B.C. to a gold medal against Ontario Aug. 9. B.C. went up five runs on three hits in the first inning and held the lead to shutout Ontario 5-0 for the win.

The girls soccer team, anchored on defence by Kitsilano grad Kathryn Baker, defeated the hosts from Quebec 3-2 at the Stade Université de Sherbrooke Aug. 8 to win gold for B.C. Coached by Jesse Symons, who helms the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite program, the team took an early lead and went up 2-0 before Quebec could respond.

The hosts evened the score at the 33-minute mark but the Western side would not be denied. Sam Dion scored her second point of the night when she headed in a corner kick from Rachel Jones for the winning goal.

Two St. George's graduates hit it out on the tennis courts at Sherbrooke's Centre Recreatif Rock Forest. Patrick Hall, a member of the Jericho Tennis Club, won gold in the boys doubles, defeating Quebec 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, with his Richmond teammate Haolong (Felix) Fan Aug. 7. Alexander Day contended for gold in boys singles on the same day but fell 3-6, 4-6 to an ace from Alberta. The medals were the second for both athletes; B.C. also finished second in the team event.

Lloyd Lyall, a West Point Grey Academy student and Royal Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­Yacht Club sailor, won two silver medals for B.C., the only province to win a medal in every sailing category. Lyall came second in the single Laser and also in the double-handed 29er with RVYC teammate Ryan Wood.

Killarney's Marc Magano helped the boys wrestling team to a silver medal by defeating Ontario's Dillon Williams in the 58 kg class. The team was coached by Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club coaches Dave McKay and Vancouver's John Pineda.
