St. Thomas More 13 – 17 Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół»College
With 14 seconds left to tick off the game clock, Fighting Irish running back Robbie Welch carried the ball nine yards to score and give Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół»College its second pre-season win in AAA varsity football. The Irish (2-0) defeated the Knights 17-13 Sept. 13 at O’Hagan Field.Â
The Knights (1-1) wrestled the lead away from the hosts late in the game but Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół»College countered in the final minute.
Welch ran for 95 yards, averaging 6.5 yards each carry in the offence’s total output of 218 yards on the ground. On defence, Matthew Lowden had 13 tackles and Kristian Domingo added 12.
Giordy Belfiore, a Grade 10 student starting at quarterback, threw for 128 yards and connected on 12 or 25 attempts.
Head coach Todd Bernett said Belfiore has a promising future with the Irish. “We just felt he gave us the best chance to win,” said the coach. “He will make some young-guy mistakes but he applies coaching and instruction very quickly, so each game of growth is like months of development to him.”
