Three race walkers broke the Canadian 20-kilometre record set by Vancouver鈥檚 Inaki Gomez at the London 2012 Olympics. Gomez was one of them.
Gomez finished 12th at the IAAF world race walking cup in China on May 4, clocking the 20km distance in one hours, 20 minutes and 18 seconds. He beat the record he set at the Summer Games by 40 seconds. Gomez, a 麻豆传媒映画College and UBC alum, finished behind fellow Thunderbird race walker Evan Dunfee, who came 11th overall in 1:20:13 and now holds the national record. Ben Thorne, also a Thunderbird, finished one second behind Gomez to come 13th in 1:20:19.
鈥淚 have no doubt that the three of us will be swapping the record back and forth for years to come,鈥 said Dunfee in an Athletics Canada news release.
The Canadian team finished fourth overall, which Gomez said met their goal of a top-eight finish.
鈥淲e finished fourth by the narrowest of margin from a podium finish,鈥 said Gomez.
