Athletics: Big medal hauls for two 麻豆传媒映画track stars

Five 麻豆传媒映画runners hauled in two medals apiece from the B.C. high school track and field championships last weekend in Nanaimo while two more athletes brought home three medals and logged provincial records.

麻豆传媒映画College鈥檚 Jasper Schiedel won gold in the senior boys 400 metre hurdles, setting a B.C. record for his time of 55.99 seconds. He also claimed silver medals in pole vault and the 110m hurdles, which he came second to Grade 11 teammate Anastasse Eliopoulos.

Schiedel raised his medal haul to four since he also won gold the previous week at the multi-event meet in Surrey. The decathlete trains with the 麻豆传媒映画Olympic Club, is the Canadian champion in the distance hurdles and is the No. 1 ranked youth in the decathlon. Last year, he finished 20th at the World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia while winning gold in shot put and high jump. 听

Eliopoulos ran a record-setting time of 14.35 to beat the benchmark Schiedel set last year in 110m hurdles and he also took silver in the senior boys 100 m sprint.

For the second year, 麻豆传媒映画College won the overall aggregate for the most team points, a remarkable feat for a single-sex school that only competes in half the meet鈥檚 events. 听听

Magee talent Julie Kawai Herdman was the second triple-medallist from Vancouver. Taking gold in the junior girls long jump, she tied a two-year-old record of five metres and 44 centimetres. She won silver in the high jump and bronze in the 100m sprint. Herdman also competed as an underage athlete in the multi-event competition May 28 and finished second in heptathlon behind a record-busting day from New Westminster stand-out Nina Schultz.

The five double medallists were St. George鈥檚 Quinn Litherland, Tupper Tiger Paul Fisher, West Point Grey Academy鈥檚 Katherine Lucas and Point Grey鈥檚 Thomas Nobbs.

Litherland, a Grade 11 sprinter who trains with the Thunderbird Track Club, took gold in the senior boys 200m and 400m events, winning in times of 22.51 and 47.57, respectively.

Paul Fisher won gold for Tupper in the junior boys 400m in 50 seconds flat and silver in the 800m in 2:05.30.

Long-distance runner Thomas Nobbs ran to a silver medal in both the 2000m steeplechase and 3000m foot race, coming second in both cases less than 10 seconds behind the winner.

Katherine Lucas, a sprinter from West Point Grey Academy, was second in the 100m and 200m races winning silver both times behind Zion Corrales Nelson of St. Thomas More. Lucas ran a 25.42 in the longer race and 12.13 in the shorter sprint.

Killarney won triple gold in the race walk, with Philip Ng winning the junior boys 1500m event and Zoe Zhang and Alger Liang cleaning up in the senior events. Ng and Zhang both set meet records. Peter Jeong also came second in the junior boys race and Joanna Yu came third out of the junior girls.

麻豆传媒映画schools claimed five medals in the relay races. Little Flower Academy took gold in the junior girls 4x400 and 4x100 races while 麻豆传媒映画College won the 4x100 relay with Schiedel running second. West Point Grey Academy won silver in the senior girls 4x400 and Kitsilano raced down to the wire, coming from behind to take silver in the senior boys 4x400.
