The head coach of the men’s national development team for field hockey, Inderpal “Indy” Sehmbi grew up in Richmond and with that city’s competitive club.
For five years, he was an assistant coach for Team Canada and took the U18 squad to the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanging, China. In the international debut of hockey 5s, Canada won a silver medal.
Earlier this year, Sehmbi and the national U21s won another silver medal for Canada, this time at the Junior Pan Am Games in Toronto. The podium finish earned the Canadians a berth at the World Cup, a tournament that comes around once every four years and starts this week in Lucknow, India.
The Canadians face the hosts on the opening day of competition.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? As a coach, Youth Olympic Games silver medal. For my career, achieving my goal of becoming a teacher. As a person, having my parents tell me they are proud of me.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Ever since I was 15, I wanted to be a teacher for my career. From the age of eight, I always wanted to play on the men’s national field hockey team.
High tops or flip flops? Flip-Flops
How are you like your father? We are both comedians, historians, the youngest in our families and we love family drives through B.C.
What was the first sport you played as a child? Soccer
What were the first points you remember scoring? In soccer, a toe punt from the centre line. A kid ducked, and the ball hit his butt, changed direction and went in to the net.
What was the first live sports game you saw? Dad took me to see Wayne Gretzky when he played for the Kings. Last game of the season. Standing room only at the PNE. Gretzky didn’t dress. I enjoyed the frosted malt and hanging out with my dad more than watching Gretzky anyways.
What is your favourite live sports memory as a spectator? India vs Pakistan field hockey. I’ve seen them play a bunch. You don’t have to know anything about field hockey to enjoy watching these two teams play.
What is your favourite live sports memory as a participant? They all mean a lot.
What is the most useful feedback a coach gave you? "Simplicity is Genius" --- Gene Muller
What is the most important thing you can teach young athletes? Do what you love to do.
What skill do you find hardest? I struggle with my short game in golf… putting, chipping, you name it.
Who would play you in a movie of your life? If there was an Indian Ryan Gosling, he could play me.
