Metrotown towers would displace 84 units in Burnaby

Two new highrises proposed for Metrotown are heading to public hearing this month.

A total of 537 new housing units will be built, and 84 low-cost, older housing units will be destroyed if both projects are approved. Concord Barker Project Limited Partnership is proposing one 34-storey tower
with townhouses at 5895 Barker Ave., and Accord Properties is proposing one 24-storey building at 6556, 6566, 6580 and 6595 Marlborough Ave. The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. on June 26 at Burnaby City Hall.

Concord Barker Project Limited Partnership is asking for permission to build the tower on city-owned roadway at Olive Avenue and over the existing laneways north, east and south of the property of 5895 Barker Ave. There will be townhouses at the base of the tower, and a total of 220 housing units, with single-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, and underground parking. There is currently a three-storey rental apartment building with 48 units on the site.

Accord Properties is proposing a 24-storey highrise with townhouses, with a total of 317 units, in the Marlborough neighbourhood of Metrotown. A mix of junior one-, two- and three-bedroom units will be constructed. Currently, there are three low-rise residential buildings on site. The nine-, 10- and 17-unit buildings will be demolished to build the new structure.

Staff reports indicate both proposals are consistent with the city’s plan for Metrotown.
