Mayor Richard Walton cast the decisive vote in a contentious hearing Monday evening as District of North Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»council approved a massive, 411-unit development that will who call Emery Place home.
Walton noted that Mosaic's development is consistent with the district's official community plan. He also reminded the gallery, which was filled with Emery Place residents, that the developer could build 61 luxury units or renovate the site and offer far more expensive apartments without going through a council hearing.
The proposal is set to include 327 stratas and 84 rentals, half of which are set to be rented at discounted rates.
The project was vociferously opposed by Coun. Jim Hanson, who argued that when measured against community values like inclusiveness and compassion, the project fails.
Council voted 4-3 to approve the project with Walton, Couns. Mathew Bond, Robin Hicks and Roger Bassam in support. Couns. Hanson, Lisa Muri and Doug MacKay-Dunn opposed the project.
