RANTS AND RAVES: Pesky renters, buzzing helicopters and infuriating parking tickets

To apartment renters who think they can rule the common areas of the rental building: When you rent your apartment by the month, your apartment is the only place you are paying for.

To apartment renters who think they can rule the common areas of the rental building: When you rent your apartment by the month, your apartment is the only place you are paying for. The building owner and building manager are in charge of the common areas, i.e. halls, lounge and library, etc. Not you. These areas are for all the tenants. If you want to take control of public spaces, then get a condo or buy your own house and do what you want. You dont have any rules here.

Premier Christy Clark and Richmond Liberal MLA John Yap have set up a task force aimed at boosting the number of skilled immigrants coming to British Columbia. Clark claims skilled immigrants are needed to fill the more than one million job openings expected in British Columbia over the next decade. Yap added skilled people all over the world want to come to B.C. and the task force aim is to make it easier for them to emigrate. It bothers me our already cash-strapped provincial government would spend more tax dollars attracting skilled workers from outside the province (and country) when it should be spent training unemployed British Columbians. Is it not the job of our elected officials to look out for the best interests of those who elected them? Oh silly me I forgot, Christy wasnt elected!

Im listening to and watching a helicopter thats been circling the west end for the last couple of hours now. The noise level is very annoying. But more than that, with these wind anomalies weve been experiencing, these high blustering winds, does it make a lot of sense to allow a helicopter to be circling in a high-density residential area? Could they regulate something like this? Can you hear that? Listen. It sounds like a bloody war in Vietnam. Nobody should be flying that low in a residential area so unless this guy is some kind of bomb-by expert, he could accidentally crash into one of these towers. Its not the first time West Enders have complained about low-level helicopter flights, especially when theres no purpose to them.

RE: Age of Aquarius redux, Rants Dec. 8. Your slant on the 60s and 70s really annoys me. My generation, we marched. We got out on the street because the media was not getting the truth and we marched. And you know what? The war in Vietnam ended, womens rights got better, gay rights came into existence, etc.. Do you think that would have happened without us marching? Good luck to you. Youre naive. It wouldnt have happened. The Occupy people, thats what theyre doing. God love them.

This is for Time aint on your Side, Rants Dec. 8. The real rant about the parking lot at Toys R Us is that you didnt need to pay that parking ticket at all. Its not a city ticket. It doesnt affect your drivers licence and you dont have a problem getting your insurance again at the end of the year if you havent paid it. Theyre private companies. Just dont bloody pay them. I got a ticket just like you did. The only thing is dont park in the same place or anywhere that company is set up because they will tow you and force you to pay the towing and the money you owe them.

I witnessed a person confronting a woman for wearing a Middle Eastern veil in Canadian society and I just want to state as a Canadian that if Coco Chanel had worn a veil, even if shed worn a burqa, if she had decided that was a fashionable thing to do, youd be seeing a lot of burqas out there and it wouldnt be an issue. What a person wears on their head, be it a wig or a veil, should not be any of your business any more than what you wear on your head is their business. Confronting a person in public and insulting their culture and religion really offends me as a Canadian. I wish I had a baseball bat; I would have used it, you big yokel.

Scientists just discovered an earth-like planet 600 light years away. Thats really great. That tells me theres no escaping the reality that were on this planet now; we dont have 600 years to sit in a capsule and fly off to this planet if its livable. Maybe it would be a good idea to be more positive about people who are protesting for green things like greening rooftops and using our laneways as more than just garbage dumps. Lets move into the 21st century and lets do it soon. This winter will prove that extreme weather is now occurring and there is no other Earth to jet off to, theres no Club-Medding away from this problem. We all share this tragedy that our Earth is in crisis and getting worse.
