This story underlines opportunities open to the new school board to advocate strongly for students and exemplary school programs, especially as elected officials face the prospect of tightening budgets and rising expectations, whether academic, vocational or technical. Although curricular directions are set by the Ministry of Education, trustees can decide what the emphasis and flavour will be to enhance local students' futures and to preserve the best of our culture.

Fine arts courses in schools-music, art, theatre, dance-highly valued by students, parents, teachers and the community-must be preserved and enhanced. An example is the Lord Byng Symphony Orchestra, flag-ship of the school's music program. The Nov. 25 public concert was a thrilling example of what can be done. Bouquets to parents, staff, trustees and conductor Scott MacLennan, all of whom ensure this will continue to happen.
