Re: "Restaurant plan dashes homeowners neighbourhood dream," Feb. 1.

I'd like to point out that a neighbourhood brewery/restaurant may in fact be a positive addition to the area if the owner/operators are respectful of their neighbours and work with them to create a local focal point and gathering place that provides services, employment and character to the area.

Ms. Racanelli voices concern about "the noise, the traffic, whatever's going to happen," but has she considered there are strict city bylaws in place to protect neighbours from establishments such as brew pubs from disturbing the tranquility of their neighbours, that having local establishments to go eat and enjoy a drink with friends and neighbours in their own neighbourhood means that people do not have to drive and travel and that "whatever's going to happen" may be that her area gains a great local establishment that contributes positively to the local fabric and provides a great local gathering spot?

I live with my wife and 19-month-old daughter about 150 metres from Commercial Drive and one of the largest and busiest restaurants in the area, which features an extensive list of craft beer. Neighbours initially protested the restaurant, citing many of the same concerns Ms. Racanelli has and the restaurant's owner/ operators have worked hard to ensure there are no problems... and now many of those same people who were protesting frequent the establishment with their families.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»needs more neighbourhood places to socialize, places that are a part of the local fabric. The last thing we should be advocating for is the centralization of restaurant-pub type establishments in commercial areas where people must travel distances to get to like Granville Street's Entertainment District.
