To the editor:

The Developmental Disabilities Association has been recycling clothing in partnership with Value Village for over 30 years now. We own and operate our own bins and sell the collected goods to our partner, Value Village. We do not just lend our name to them. All profits generated from these bins are either spent or held on behalf of people with developmental disabilities. We sell to American buyers because there are no similar Canadian companies that will offer us a comparable relationship.

Households prefer to donate clothing and goods via donation bins because of the convenience. The problem we have encountered is precisely what your article addresses. To mitigate "dumping," we offer complimentary home pick-up service and focus our marketing efforts on providing awareness and information about the repercussions of dumping at bin sites.

Alanna Hendren, executive director, Developmental Disabilities Association
