To the editor:
Naturally one laments the passing of the Playhouse, but amidst all the calls for government intervention, does no one stop to ask: why has attendance been so low in the past few years? Does no one remember how angry theatre-goers were when the Playhouse said they were no longer going to do "classical" plays? That decision spawned Blackbird Theatre, which took on the job of doing those plays, and they seem to be doing it with a large attendance.
Might part of the answer be that the Playhouse has not been effective in choosing plays people want to see? Not the whole answer. But part of it.
