To the editor:
As the new Lord Kitchener school at 25th Avenue and Collingwood Street takes shape, I cannot help but question the wisdom, or lack thereof, of the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»School Board's decision to "preserve" the original old elementary school as a 'heritage' building.
In order to save this wood-framed structure, it was completely gutted internally, new seismically upgraded foundations were built some 30 metres away, then the building shell was moved to this new location. To accommodate the move, the adventure playground was dismantled and partly re-assembled on the sports field, where it will stay until space is again made available for its return to a site near the original placement. Now, in order to fit with the new school, the rear wall of the "heritage" building has been partially removed to be rebuilt, and what was the side of the building will have to be altered to accommodate a new entrance.
How this drastic reconstruction qualifies as a heritage preservation I do not understand. The funds wasted on this nonsensical project could have been far better spent on upgrades to other needy schools. The school board should be vilified for giving in to ridiculous heritage demands and for this profligate waste of scarce educational dollars.
